NW&RA: National Waste & Recycling Association

NWRA, the National Waste & Recycling Association, formed in 1962 as the National Council of Refuse Disposal Trade Associations, is the trade association representing private-sector US waste and recycling companies, as well as the manufacturers and service providers that do business with those companies. NWRA is also the Secretariat of the ANSI Z245 Accredited Standards Committee, which develops industry standards for waste and recycling equipment, facilities, and operations. Standards from NWRA are available both individually, directly through the ANSI webstore, and as part of a Standards Subscription. If you or your organization are interested in easy, managed, online access to standards that can be shared, a Standards Subscription may be what you need - please contact us at: [email protected] or 1-212-642-4980 or Request Proposal Price.

ANSI Z245.1-2017

Mobile Wastes and Recyclable Materials Collection, Transportation, and Compaction Equipment

This standard was developed by American National Standards Institute Accredited Standards Committee Z245 Subcommittee 1 on Mobile Collection Equipment and approved by Accredited Standards Committee Z245.  This standard revises the collection, transportation and compaction equipment safety requirements found in ANSI Z245.1-2012 by providing specific requirements for construction, maintenance and operation necessary to ensure the safe manufacture and operation of the mobile equipment. Provisions of ANSI/NW&RA Z245.1 (PA) approved August 2, 2014 remain in effect and are immediately applicable to all new mobile collecting and compacting equipment.  The requirements contained in this standard pertain to new mobile collection equipment as produced by the manufacturer. New requirements and revisions are not intended to be retroactive for waste collection vehicles manufactured to comply with earlier revisions of this standard.

ANSI Z245.2-2013

Stationary Compactors - Safety Requirements for Installation, Maintenance, and Operation

Provides safety requirements with respect to the installation, operation, maintenance, service, repair, modification, and reconstruction (where applicable) of stationary compacting equipment. Applies to stationary compactors rated at 600 volts or less, for outdoor or indoor use, and are employed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation, operation, and maintenance instructions and procedures.

ANSI Z245.5-2013

Baling Equipment - Safety Requirements for Installation, Maintenance, and Operation

This standard revises safety requirements with respect to the installation, operation, maintenance, service, repair, modification, and reconstruction (where applicable) of baling equipment covered by ANSI Z245.5-2008, Baling Equipment - Safety Requirements.

The requirements of this standard apply to balers rated at 600 volts or less, for outdoor or indoor use, and are employed in accordance with the manufacturer's written installation, operation, and maintenance instructions and procedures.

ANSI Z245.21-2013

Stationary Compactors - Safety Requirements for Manufacturing and Reconstruction

This standard revises requirements to minimize the risk of fire, electrical shock and injury to persons during operation and maintenance of stationary compacting equipment for use with wastes and recyclable materials by commercial businesses, apartment buildings, industrial plants, waste processing facilities, waste disposal and transfer industries, and recycling facilities.

The requirements of this standard apply to stationary compactors rated at 600 volts or less, for outdoor or indoor use, and are employed in accordance with the manufacturer's written installation, operation, and maintenance instructions and procedures.

ANSI Z245.42-2012

Waste Transfer Station - Safety Requirements

This American National Standard is applicable to all persons who design, manufacture, assemble, modify, operate, clean, maintain, service, repair, or use transfer station facilities that engage in collecting, receiving, storing, processing, and eventual transportation of solid waste and recyclable materials. For purposes of this standard, a waste transfer station shall be deemed a facility with a tipping floor and may or may not also provide for a public drop- off area for solid waste.

ANSI Z245.60-2008

Equipment Technology and Operations for Wastes and Recyclable Materials - Waste Containers - Compatibility Dimensions

Establishes dimensional requirements for all waste containers commonly used in the collection, compaction and transportation of solid waste and recyclables in residential, commercial and industrial applications. Specified labeling will assist the users of such equipment in identifying that a container so marked is compatible with a lifting device designed to accommodate containers of the same type. The revision includes dimensions for Type L (hook-lift) and Type S (front loader) containers.

ANSI Z245.30-2008

Equipment Technology and Operations for Wastes and Recyclable Materials - Waste Containers - Safety Requirements

Establishes safety requirements with respect to the manufacture, reconstruction, use, modification, maintenance, service, operation, and installation (where applicable) of containers, two-wheeled carts, and two-wheeled cart lifters use for the collection, transportation and recycling of solid wastes.

ANSI Z245.51-2013

Baling Equipment - Safety Requirements

This standard establishes requirements to minimize the risk of fire, electrical shock and injury to persons during operation and maintenance of baling equipment for use with wastes and recyclable materials by commercial businesses, apartment buildings, industrial plants, waste processing facilities, waste disposal and transfer industries, and recycling facilities.

The requirements of this standard apply to balers rated at 600 volts or less, for outdoor or indoor use, and are employed in accordance with the manufacturer's written installation, operation, and maintenance instructions and procedures.

ANSI Z245.41-2015

Facilities for the Processing of Commingled Recyclable Materials - Safety Requirements

Establishes safety requirements for the design, manufacture, construction, modification, maintenance and operation of facilities used in the processing of commingled wastes and recyclable materials. It does not cover other types of facilities such as, waste-to-energy plants, scrap processing facilities, transfer stations, or mixed waste processing facilities, unless there is a commingled processing operation as part of these facilities.

ANSI Z245.1-2008

Mobile Wastes and Recyclable Materials Collection, Transportation and Compaction Equipment - Safety Requirements

This revised American National Standard is applicable to all persons engaged in the manufacture, modification, operation, cleaning, maintenance, service, or repair of mobile collecting, transporting, and compacting equipment. It attempts to distinguish between persons who may be the legal owner, lessor, lessee, or who are otherwise contracted with or hired to become involved with, the equipment. Excluded from this standard is equipment used for the collection, transportation, or disposal of hazardous or flammable materials regulated by title 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 263 or 49 CFR Parts 171 through 180. Stationary compactors, which were included in American National Standard for Safety Requirements for Refuse Collection and Compaction Equipment, ANSI Z245.1-1975, and American National Standard for Refuse Collecting and Compacting Equipment - Safety Requirements, ANSI Z245.1-1984, are now covered by American National Standard for Refuse Collection, Processing, and Disposal Equipment - Stationary Compactors - Safety Requirements, ANSI Z245.2-1992, as of the effective date of that standard,1 and future revisions of that standard.

Clauses 7 and 8 provide equipment safeguards and features and dual drive configuration requirements that shall apply to mobile rear-loading, side-loading, front-loading, and mechanized container collecting equipment used to receive, compact, transport, and unload waste or recyclable materials; to mobile tilt-frame and hoist-type equipment commonly used to pick up, transport, unload, and set down open top or enclosed waste or recyclable materials containers; to vehicles used to receive, separate, densify, transport, and unload recyclable wastes; to grapple loaders that pick up, load and transport bulky uncontainerized special waste like wood waste or white goods; to vehicles used to transfer waste from one waste processing or disposal facility to another; to satellite vehicles commonly used to receive and transport waste or recyclable materials for unloading into other mobile waste or recyclable materials collecting equipment; and to container lifting devices used to lift, dump and return containers.
